It is a sunny morning on my cheat day from workout, and I have RAISIN WHITE BREAD instead of WHOLE WHEAT bread in stock!! Perfect timing to finally try the air-fry French Toast recipe that I have long saved in my YouTube “watch later” playlist. Honestly, who does not like the deep fried French Toast, especially the Hong Kong style with rich amount of peanut butter, condensed milk, honey running across, and a giant chunk of salted butter that is so heavy that is crushes and leaves a dent on the fluffy toast?
Whenever I go to Hong Kong, or a Cantonese café, I always have to choose between 西多士 Hong Kong style French Toast and 菠蘿油 warm Pineapple Bun with a cold slice of butter in it. BUT, we restrained because of the calories, and also because shelter-in-place has already largely decreased our daily exercise (walking 🙂 ). Seriously, I don’t remember the last time I voluntarily ORDERED a French toast, I don’t know whether I am too conscious of the calories it has that my body told me to reject it as a reflex, or I am self-disciplined; I would rather believe I AM SELF-DISCIPLINED.
Now with my pink air-fryer, I can enjoy it once a while!!! At least getting rid of the DEEP FRIED OIL! You can make it even healthier by using less peanut butter, less butter, less condensed milk, less honey, less… oh well, don’t make it XD
QUICK TAKEAWAYS
- soak the break FULLY in egg for 1-2mins
- adding milk in egg will give smoother, silkier texture; only egg will be too eggy (for me)
- adjust temperature and time needed for your air-fryer, check on the toast every 3mins
- use a knife dipped in hot water and wiped clean to cut cold butter is easier
RECIPE
Portion: 1
Estimate Time: 15mins
- 2 pieces of bread, the Hong Kong style usually uses thick bread
- 1 egg
- 10g milk
- pinch of salt
- peanut butter
- 5-10g salted butter (optional, highly recommend 😀 )
- honey (optional, highly recommend 😀 )
- condensed milk (optional, highly recommend :D)
Step 1: slice off the edges of both pieces of bread, don’t worry about wasting, you will use them later!
Step 2: spread peanut butter FULLY and THICKLY on one bread, many spread butter on the other bread, your choice!!
Step 3: whisk egg, 10g milk and pinch of salt in a container till color changes from bright yellow to light yellow, put two breads together and emerge ALL sides and edges in the egg
especially soak the edges!
Step 4: preheat air-fryer at 200C/390F for 3mins. Do NOT leave the parchment paper or air-fryer liner in while preheating withOUT any food in tray, the liner can fly up and burn
Step 5: take out air-fryer tray, put in liner, brush with butter so the French Toast will not stick on it
brush liner with butter/spray oil
Step 6: transfer toast from egg bath to the CENTER of air-fryer tray for even frying
Step 7: air-fry one side at 180C/355F for 5mins, flip and fry the other side for 4-5mins. Check every 3mins ensure NOT over-burnt.
6mins on one side is bit too long for my air-fryer
Step 8: remove toast from air-fryer, slice 5-10g salted butter and place on the toast. Add as much honey and condensed milk as you want!
(what about my bread edges??)
I don’t know if you like crunchy bread crust but I do! They are cheap and delicious, I considered it healthy substitutes of chips! You can put the bread edges back in air-fryer, fry for 5-10mins at 180C/355F. Check and shake the tray every 2-3mins. You can sprinkle sugar, salt or pour melted butter with milk powder on them for extra flavor!
READY TO SERVE!~~ ENJOY!!!
